Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 miles from central London. Chelmsford boasts a population of about one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is an early town that was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was later the site of a Roman fortress in roughly AD 60, and the settlement that developed round the fortification was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon settlement followed after the demise of the Romans in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was listed as Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later being called by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the citizens of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the agitators were accordingly hung in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the uprising.

The seventeenth century witnessed even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed numerous presumed witches.

Across the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing such items as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its importance in light industry led to its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was successfully hit on a number of occasions.

The train came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately forty five yrs before (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling boats to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into a period of decline in the 1980's, mainly because much of its manufacturing facilities went bust, even so it is still a flourishing and developing town today, largely due to the proximity to London, and the terrific rail and road communications.

Chelmsford is found just off the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is approximately 26 km driving distance from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of the capital.
