River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortress in about AD 60, and the settlement which expanded round the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon camp superseded the demise of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recognized as Celmeresfort, although by1189 it had become known by its modern name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C many of the occupants of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the leading agitators were subsequently put to death in the town after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The seventeenth century saw lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death countless presumed witches.

Across the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a major manufacturing town in the 19th C, making such products as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its import in light industry resulted in its being a target for bombing in the Second World War, and it was successfully hit quite a few times.

The railway came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for craft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through some decline during the nineteen-eighties, when a lot of its plants closed, though it is still a flourishing and growing town today, mainly due to the proximity to London, and its terrific road and rail connections.

The town lies close to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is roughly sixteen miles drive from Colchester and about 32 miles from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
