The county town of Essex, Chelmsford can be found on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford has got a populace of about 110,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is an old town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in roughly the 1st century AD, and the encampment which developed round the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment succeeded the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, although by1189 it was being referred to by its current title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C some of the occupants of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the leading agitators were later executed in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th Cent saw more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed numerous alleged witches.

For many generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned in to a major industrial town during the nineteenth century, making such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target for bombing during the Second World War, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The train came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years earlier (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, enabling watercraft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, since a lot of its industry closed down, even so it still is a successful and developing town today, largely due to the nearness to the capital, plus the good road and rail links.

The town is set near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is approximately 16 miles drive from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
