Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 miles from central London. The town has got a populace of about 110,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was later the location of a Roman fortress in roughly AD 60, and the commune which developed surrounding the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community followed after the decline of the Romans in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, however by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its current identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the occupants of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the agitators were later executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th century saw more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death many suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For many centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a considerable manufacturing town in the 19th century, manufacturing such products as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target for bombing in WWII, and it was hit on several occasions.

The railway line came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years before (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, helping boats to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a time of decline in the 1980's, mainly because a lot of its factories closed, though it remains a flourishing and growing town today, largely due to the nearness to the city of london, plus its first class rail and road communications.
