The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 miles from central London. Chelmsford boasts a population of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in about AD 60, and the commune that grew up surrounding the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon encampment succeeded the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, although 100 years later it was being referred to by its current title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C some of the inhabitants of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the leading agitators were subsequently put to death in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century witnessed many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed many supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a major manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, making products such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was struck a number of times.

The railway arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did around forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which made it possible for watercraft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered a period of decline in the 1980's, mainly because much of its production facilities went bust, though it remains a flourishing and blooming town today, principally due to its nearness to the city of london, plus its first rate road and rail links.

The town can be found beside the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is approximately 26 km from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
