Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated on the Can and Chelmer rivers, a car journey of around 32 miles from the city of London. The town has got a population of roughly 111,500 inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was later the location of a Roman fortress in roughly the first century AD, and the encampment which grew up around the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon community superseded the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was described as Celmeresfort, though 100 years later it had become known by its present title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C some of the locals of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the ringleaders were consequently executed in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century saw even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed countless assumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a considerable manufacturing town in the 19th C, manufacturing such products as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target during WW2, and it was successfully hit a few times.

The railway line arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for vessels to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because a good deal of its industry shut down, even so it still is a successful and booming town today, primarily due to its nearness to the city of london, and the exceptional rail and road communications.

The town is situated near the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's about sixteen mls from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
