Essex's county town, Chelmsford sits on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 miles from the heart of London. The town boasts a population of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).
