Its import in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target of bombing in WWII, and it was successfully struck several times.

The railway found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years earlier (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, enabling watercraft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through significant decline in the 1980's, since much of its industry closed down, though it still is a flourishing and growing town today, mainly because of its proximity to the capital, and the terrific rail and road links.
