Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set on the rivers Chelmer and Can, a drive of some 32 mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford has a population of roughly 111,000 inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortification in roughly AD 60, and the village that evolved surrounding the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon encampment superseded the demise of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, though 100 years later it had taken on its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C many of the residents of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the main culprits were thereafter hung in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century witnessed even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged many suspected witches.

Across the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a substantial industrial town during the 19th century, producing such items as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target of bombing during the Second World War, and it was successfully struck on a number of occasions.

The train came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling craft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into some decline during the nineteen-eighties, when a good deal of its plants went bust, even so it still is a flourishing and blooming town today, predominantly due to the proximity to London, plus the quality road and rail communications.

The town is positioned beside the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's approximately sixteen mls from Colchester and about 51 km from the centre of the capital. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
