The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, roughly thirty two miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of some 110,000 occupants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

An Anglo Saxon community came after the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, nevertheless 100 years later being called by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the occupants of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the agitators were later executed in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The seventeenth century saw more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed numerous presumed witches.

Through the generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed into a substantial industrial town in the 19th century, crafting items such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target for bombing in WWII, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The railway arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years earlier (1797), when it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling ships to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into substantial decline during the 1980's, simply because a high percentage of its industry closed, though it is still a thriving and expanding town today, largely due to the closeness to London, and the terrific rail and road communications.
