The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 miles from the city of London. The town boasts a population of about 110,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD, and the community which developed around the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon camp came after the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 being called by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the citizens of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the agitators were consequently executed in the town after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The seventeenth century saw even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed countless presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to a considerable industrial town in the nineteenth century, making such goods as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target in World War 2, and it was successfully hit a number of times.

The train came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling vessels to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered significant decline in the 1980's, mainly because a high percentage of its factories ceased to be profitable, although it is still a thriving and blooming town today, largely because of its proximity to the capital, and the first class road and rail connections.

The town is situated near the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's around 16 mls driving distance from Colchester and about 51 kilometres from the centre of the capital.
