Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 miles from the heart of London. The town has got a population of approximately 111,500 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortification in approximately AD 60, and the commune that evolved surrounding the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon camp came after the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, however by1189 being called by its present identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the locals of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the leading culprits were ultimately hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The seventeenth century saw more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged many supposed witches.

Through the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed in to an important industrial town in the nineteenth century, producing products such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target for bombing during WW2, and it was struck several times.

The train came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some around forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping vessels to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered a time of decline in the 1980's, when a good deal of its industry ceased to be profitable, even so it still is a flourishing and developing town today, predominantly due to its close proximity to the capital, plus the first class road and rail communications.
