Essex's county town, Chelmsford can be found on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 mls from the centre of London. The town has a population of roughly 110,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in around AD 60, and the commune that expanded around the fort was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon encampment succeeded the end of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was documented as Celmeresfort, nevertheless one hundred years later it was being referred to by its current identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century many of the inhabitants of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the agitators were subsequently put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the uprising.

The 17th C witnessed more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged many presumed witches.

Over the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th century, making products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was successfully hit on a few occasions.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, letting craft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, when a good deal of its industry went bust, though it still is a successful and booming town today, for the most part due to its proximity to the city of london, and its exceptional rail and road communications.

The town sits near the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's roughly 16 miles drive from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
