Essex's county town, Chelmsford can be found on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford has a populace of approximately 111,500 residents, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD, and the village which expanded around the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment followed the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was documented as Celmeresfort, nevertheless by1189 it had taken on its current title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the residents of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the ringleaders were accordingly executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th C witnessed lots more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged many suspected witches.

Throughout the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a substantial industrial town during the 19th C, manufacturing goods such as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses.
