A Saxon settlement came after the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was recognized as Celmeresfort, however by1189 it had become known by its present-day title of Chelmsford.

As early as the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. Through the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to an important manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, manufacturing items such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industry led to its being a target for bombing in World War 2, and it was successfully hit on a few occasions.

The railway line came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years before (1797), at which time it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging boats to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered some decline during the nineteen-eighties, because a high percentage of its industries closed, though it is still a thriving and expanding town today, largely because of its proximity to the capital, and the excellent road and rail links.
