The railway arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling ships to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into a period of decline during the 1980's, since a good deal of its industry went bust, though it is still a successful and developing town today, mostly due to the nearness to the capital, and its terrific rail and road communications.
