The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford has got a population of approximately 110,000 inhabitants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

An Anglo Saxon camp followed after the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was listed as Celmeresfort, nonetheless by the year 1199 it had become known by its modern name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize.
