A Saxon settlement followed after the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C some of the residents of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the leading agitators were consequently executed in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century saw yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death many presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a major industrial town in the 19th C, crafting such items as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target during WW2, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping craft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into significant decline during the 1980's, simply because much of its industry went bust, even so it remains a thriving and blooming town today, mostly due to its closeness to London, plus its quality road and rail connections.
