Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was later the site of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD, and the encampment that evolved surrounding the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon camp followed after the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was listed as Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later it had taken on its present-day name of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the residents of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the ringleaders were later hung in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C saw more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed many supposed witches.

Through the generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a considerable manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, manufacturing products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target of bombing in WW2, and it was successfully hit on a number of occasions.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping craft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, since a lot of its industry shut down, even so it is still a successful and blooming town today, mainly due to the close proximity to the city of london, and the first class road and rail connections.
