The county town of Essex, Chelmsford can be found on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two mls from the centre of London. The town boasts a population of about 111,000 inhabitants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was later on the site of a Roman fort in about AD 60, and the town which grew up surrounding the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon camp followed the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was noted as Celmeresfort, even though 100 years later being called by its present identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the inhabitants of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the leading agitators were accordingly put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th C witnessed even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death numerous alleged exponents of witchcraft.

For several generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important industrial town in the 19th century, manufacturing products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target of bombing in the Second World War, and it was hit a number of times.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done roughly 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, which enabled ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a period of decline during the 1980's, since a lot of its industry ceased to be profitable, all the same it is still a successful and blooming town today, predominantly due to its proximity to the city of london, plus its excellent rail and road communications.

The town can be found just off the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is approximately sixteen miles from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
