The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 miles from central London. The town has got a population of about 111,500 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is an early town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

A Saxon encampment followed after the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though by1189 it had become known by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the occupants of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the instigators were later put to death in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century saw yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed countless supposed witches.
