The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 miles from the city of London. The town boasts a populace of approximately 111,500 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortress in about the 1st century AD, and the community which expanded surrounding the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement followed the end of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was listed as Celmeresfort, though by1189 it had become known by its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the occupants of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the ringleaders were thereafter put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th C saw more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death numerous assumed witches.

For several centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town during the 19th C, manufacturing items such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industry resulted in its being a target of bombing during WW2, and it was successfully hit on a number of occasions.

The railway line found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some roughly forty five years before (1797), when it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping craft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, as a lot of its industry shut down, even so it continues to be a thriving and expanding town today, largely due to its close proximity to the capital, plus the excellent road and rail communications.

The town is set just off the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is roughly twenty six km car journey from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
