Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two mls from central London. Chelmsford boasts a population of roughly 111,000 residents, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortress in roughly AD 60, and the town that grew up surrounding the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community superseded the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later being called by its current title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the people of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the leading instigators were ultimately executed in the town after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The seventeenth century witnessed lots more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed many supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Throughout the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into an important manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, manufacturing items such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its importance in light industry led to its being a bombing target in World War 2, and it was struck on several occasions.

The railway line found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging ships to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through considerable decline during the 1980's, since a good deal of its industry ceased to be profitable, though it is still a flourishing and growing town today, primarily due to the closeness to London, and its good road and rail communications.

Chelmsford sits close to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's about 26 kilometers drive from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
