The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two mls from central London. Chelmsford has a population of roughly 110,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was later the site of a Roman fortification in roughly 60 AD, and the village that evolved surrounding the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement came after the demise of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was listed as Celmeresfort, nevertheless 100 years later it was being referred to by its modern name of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the inhabitants of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the ringleaders were accordingly put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the uprising.

The 17th C saw even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed many assumed witches.

Throughout the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed in to an important manufacturing town during the 19th C, crafting such items as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was struck many times.

The railway line arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, which enabled ships to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into serious decline in the nineteen-eighties, when a high percentage of its manufacturing plants closed down, even so it still is a flourishing and developing town today, principally due to its nearness to London, plus the terrific rail and road communications.

The town lies near the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's about twenty six km car journey from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
