The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 mls from the heart of London. The town has a population of approximately 111,500 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is an old town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fort in roughly the 1st century AD, and the commune that expanded in the vicinity of the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon encampment followed the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, although by1189 it had taken on its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the residents of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the ringleaders were accordingly executed in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th C witnessed even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death many presumed witches.

For many centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned in to a substantial manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, making such goods as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its importance in light industry caused it to be a target for bombing during WW2, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The railway line arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some about 45 years earlier (1797), when it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping ships to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into a period of decline in the 1980's, when much of its industry closed down, though it remains a thriving and blooming town today, primarily because of its nearness to the capital, plus the terrific rail and road communications.

The town is found beside the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's around 16 mls drive from Colchester and about 32 mls from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
