Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, about thirty two mls from the city of London. Chelmsford has got a populace of around one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is an old town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD, and the encampment which grew up surrounding the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon community superseded the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later it was being referred to by its modern name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C many of the inhabitants of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the ringleaders were thereafter executed in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C witnessed yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death countless presumed witches.

Throughout the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became a vital industrial town during the 19th Cent, crafting such goods as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its importance in light industry resulted in its being a target for bombing during WW2, and it was hit a number of times.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years before (1797), at which time it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, letting craft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into significant decline during the 1980's, mainly because much of its industries ceased to be profitable, even so it still is a successful and expanding town today, mainly due to its proximity to London, and its superb road and rail communications.

Chelmsford can be found adjacent to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is about 26 km from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
