Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, about 32 miles from central London. The town has got a populace of some 110,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

The seventeenth century witnessed many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged numerous suspected witches.

For several generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing such items as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industry led to its being a target for bombing during the Second World War, and it was struck a few times.

The train arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did roughly 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for craft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into some decline in the 1980's, when a good deal of its industrial facilities closed, even so it continues to be a thriving and developing town today, principally due to the close proximity to London, and the exceptional road and rail communications.
