The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 mls from the city of London. The town boasts a population of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fort in roughly the first century AD, and the settlement which grew up surrounding the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon encampment came after the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was documented as Celmeresfort, even though by1189 it was being referred to by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the occupants of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the instigators were later put to death in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C saw more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed countless presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Throughout the centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved into a substantial industrial town during the 19th century, manufacturing items such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target of bombing in World War 2, and it was successfully struck a few times.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling boats to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a time of decline during the 1980's, because a good deal of its industry closed, yet it continues to be a thriving and expanding town today, predominantly because of its proximity to the capital, and the good rail and road communications.

The town stands adjacent to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's about twenty six km driving distance from Colchester and about 51 kms from the centre of the capital. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
