The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two miles from the centre of London. The town boasts a population of around 111,500 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is an old town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortress in about AD 60, and the town that developed round the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon community followed after the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, nonetheless by the year 1199 it had taken on its current title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the occupants of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the agitators were accordingly put to death in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century witnessed many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged numerous supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a significant manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, manufacturing goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was successfully hit on a few occasions.

The railway arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did around forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, helping vessels to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered a time of decline in the 1980's, simply because a high percentage of its production facilities went bust, although it still is a successful and booming town today, largely due to its proximity to the capital, plus its terrific rail and road connections.

Chelmsford is set close to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's around 26 kilometers drive from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
