Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two miles from central London. The town boasts a population of approximately 110,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortress in about AD 60, and the commune that developed in the locality of the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement superseded the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, however by the year 1199 being called by its present identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the people of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the instigators were later put to death in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C witnessed many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed many assumed witches.

Over the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to an important industrial town in the 19th Cent, producing items such as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial engineering led to its being a target for bombing during WWII, and it was successfully hit many times.

The railway line arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some about 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for ships to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through some decline in the nineteen-eighties, since a lot of its industry ceased to be profitable, even so it continues to be a successful and booming town today, largely due to the close proximity to the city of london, and the good rail and road links.

The town is set near the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is approximately 16 mls drive from Colchester and about 51 kms from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
