Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 mls from the centre of London. The town boasts a population of roughly one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortification in roughly AD 60, and the village which expanded round the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp superseded the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was recognized as Celmeresfort, although 100 years later it had taken on its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the locals of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the leading culprits were accordingly put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The seventeenth century saw lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death numerous presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a major manufacturing town during the 19th C, crafting such goods as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industry resulted in its being a target of bombing during WWII, and it was successfully struck quite a few times.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately forty five years before (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, which allowed boats to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered serious decline in the 1980's, because much of its industry shut down, though it continues to be a flourishing and growing town today, principally due to the closeness to the city of london, and its exceptional rail and road communications.

The town can be found near the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's around twenty six kilometres car journey from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
