Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 mls from the heart of London. The town has a population of about 111,500 occupants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in around the first century AD, and the commune that grew up surrounding the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon camp succeeded the demise of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, however by1189 it had taken on its current title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the occupants of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the agitators were later hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th century saw more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death countless supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Through the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a major industrial town during the 19th Cent, producing items such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industry led to its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was hit quite a few times.

The railway came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for boats to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into serious decline during the 1980's, when a high percentage of its industry went bust, but it still is a successful and expanding town today, principally due to the closeness to the capital, plus the first rate road and rail links.

The town is situated close to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is roughly 26 km driving distance from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
