The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two miles from the heart of London. The town has a population of roughly 110,000 inhabitants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in about the first century AD, and the village that evolved surrounding the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon camp followed the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was recorded as Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later it was being referred to by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the residents of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the leading culprits were later executed in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th Cent saw more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed countless presumed witches.

Over the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to a vital manufacturing town during the 19th C, making such items as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target during WW2, and it was hit a number of times.

The railway arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did roughly forty five years before (1797), when it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping watercraft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a period of decline in the 1980's, when a high percentage of its industries ceased to be profitable, however it continues to be a thriving and growing town today, predominantly due to the nearness to the city of london, and the superb rail and road communications.

Chelmsford is situated beside the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's approximately 16 mls driving distance from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometres from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
