Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD, and the town that grew up in the locality of the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement followed the end of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was noted as Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later it was being referred to by its present-day title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century a number of the residents of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the leading culprits were later executed in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th Cent witnessed even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death numerous alleged witches.

Across the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into an important manufacturing town in the 19th century, crafting items such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target of bombing in WWII, and it was hit quite a few times.

The railway line found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some about forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for watercraft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, as a high percentage of its factories closed down, all the same it still is a thriving and blooming town today, primarily due to its proximity to the capital, plus the good rail and road communications.
