An Anglo Saxon camp superseded the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, nonetheless 100 years later it had become known by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the residents of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the instigators were consequently put to death in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century witnessed many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed many presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a substantial industrial town in the nineteenth century, manufacturing such items as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target of bombing in WW2, and it was successfully hit on a few occasions.

The train arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging vessels to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a time of decline in the 1980's, because a high percentage of its manufacturing plants closed, though it remains a successful and developing town today, primarily due to its close proximity to the capital, and its exceptional road and rail communications.

The town is positioned near the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is some twenty six km car journey from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
