The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two mls from the heart of London. The town has got a population of some one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortress in roughly the first century AD, and the commune which grew up in the locality of the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon camp succeeded the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, nevertheless 100 years later it had taken on its modern identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the people of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the main instigators were accordingly executed in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent saw yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged many assumed witches.

Through the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to an important industrial town in the 19th century, producing such products as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industrial engineering led to its being a target of bombing in World War 2, and it was hit a few times.

The railway came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping craft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered considerable decline during the 1980's, when a good deal of its industry went bust, even so it is still a successful and expanding town today, mostly due to the proximity to the city of london, and the first class road and rail connections.

The town is set beside the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is some 16 mls drive from Colchester and about 32 miles from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
