Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, a drive of about thirty two mls from the city of London. The town has got a populace of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in approximately AD 60, and the encampment which grew up surrounding the fortress was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment superseded the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, although 100 years later it had taken on its modern identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the locals of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the main culprits were consequently put to death in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent saw yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed numerous supposed witches.

Over the centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved in to an important manufacturing town in the 19th C, making such items as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target of bombing in WWII, and it was successfully hit several times.

The train came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done about forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, enabling boats to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a lot of its industry ceased to be profitable, though it still is a thriving and booming town today, mostly due to the close proximity to the city of london, plus the terrific road and rail links.

The town is situated close to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is some sixteen miles car journey from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
