The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits on the rivers Chelmer and Can, a drive of approximately thirty two miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of around 111,000 residents, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortification in roughly 60 AD, and the commune which developed round the fortification was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon camp followed after the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was documented as Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later it had taken on its present identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the occupants of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the ringleaders were thereafter put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th C saw even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death countless suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For many centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a considerable manufacturing town during the 19th C, manufacturing such products as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target for bombing in WW2, and it was successfully hit a few times.

The railway arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging watercraft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through substantial decline during the 1980's, because much of its plants closed, even so it still is a flourishing and expanding town today, largely due to its closeness to the capital, plus its exceptional road and rail links.

The town is found adjacent to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is approximately 26 km driving distance from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
