Essex's county town, Chelmsford sits upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of around 111,000 people, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortification in roughly AD 60, and the town that expanded round the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon camp followed after the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although 100 years later it was being referred to by its present identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the people of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the main agitators were consequently put to death in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century saw lots more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed many alleged witches.

Over the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved into an important industrial town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing products such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target in World War 2, and it was hit on several occasions.

The railway came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done about 45 years before (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through some decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a high percentage of its industry closed, though it still is a successful and developing town today, mostly due to the proximity to the capital, plus its good rail and road connections.

The town can be found adjacent to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's about 16 miles from Colchester and about 51 km from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
