The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, a car journey of some thirty two miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford has got a populace of approximately 111,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

As early as the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the occupants of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the leading instigators were accordingly hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th C saw more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed countless suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For several years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th century, manufacturing items such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industry led to its being a target of bombing during WWII, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The train found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into some decline during the 1980's, when much of its industry shut down, nevertheless it continues to be a flourishing and blooming town today, for the most part due to its close proximity to the capital, and its first class road and rail links.
