Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, a drive of roughly thirty two mls from the city of London. The town has a population of about one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is an old town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in roughly AD 60, and the encampment that evolved surrounding the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon community superseded the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, although by1189 being called by its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century a number of the citizens of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the ringleaders were consequently executed in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century saw many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged countless presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Throughout the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to an important manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, manufacturing such goods as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industry resulted in its being a target of bombing during WWII, and it was struck on several occasions.

The railway came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, helping watercraft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered some decline during the 1980's, because a high percentage of its industry closed down, though it is still a thriving and developing town today, primarily due to the nearness to the city of london, and the terrific road and rail links.
