The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 miles from the city of London. The town boasts a population of some 110,000 inhabitants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is an old town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD, and the village which grew up round the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community followed after the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, although 100 years later it had become known by its present name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the people of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the ringleaders were later put to death in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century witnessed yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death numerous suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Across the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing goods such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industry led to its being a target of bombing in World War 2, and it was hit several times.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years before (1797), when it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting vessels to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a period of decline during the 1980's, because a good deal of its industry ceased to be profitable, though it is still a successful and growing town today, largely due to the close proximity to London, plus the excellent rail and road communications.
