Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two mls from central London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of about one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is an early town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fort in around AD 60, and the town that grew up surrounding the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon settlement followed after the demise of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, however by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the people of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the ringleaders were accordingly hung in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th Cent saw yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death countless presumed witches.

Across the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned in to a substantial industrial town in the 19th C, producing such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target for bombing during WWII, and it was successfully hit on several occasions.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five years earlier (1797), when it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling craft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered some decline in the nineteen-eighties, since a high percentage of its plants went bust, even so it remains a thriving and developing town today, principally due to its proximity to the city of london, and the outstanding road and rail links.

The town is found close to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's approximately sixteen mls car journey from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the centre of London.
