Essex's county town, Chelmsford sits on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two mls from the city of London. The town has a population of around 111,000 people, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in about 60 AD, and the settlement that grew up surrounding the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment came after the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 it had become known by its current title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the inhabitants of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the main culprits were thereafter put to death in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century saw many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death numerous supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became a major manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, producing products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industry led to its being a target of bombing in WWII, and it was successfully struck on a few occasions.

The train found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, allowing watercraft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a period of decline during the 1980's, simply because much of its industry closed, even so it continues to be a thriving and blooming town today, predominantly due to its close proximity to the city of london, and its superb road and rail connections.

Chelmsford is found just off the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's some twenty six kilometers from Colchester and about 51 kilometers from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
