The railway came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately 45 yrs before (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, which allowed boats to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through substantial decline during the nineteen-eighties, when much of its industry closed, even so it still is a thriving and blooming town today, principally due to its nearness to London, and the superb rail and road communications.
