The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two miles from the heart of London. The town has got a population of roughly one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortress in around AD 60, and the community which evolved surrounding the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community followed the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 it had become known by its modern name of Chelmsford.

As early as the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the residents of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the leading instigators were later hung in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C saw even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed numerous assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th C, producing such goods as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its importance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target of bombing in WW2, and it was successfully struck a few times.

The train found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some roughly 45 years earlier (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, helping ships to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered a period of decline in the 1980's, simply because a good deal of its industries closed, in spite of this it remains a thriving and blooming town today, principally due to the close proximity to the capital, plus the quality rail and road connections.
