Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated on the rivers Can and Chelmer, a driving distance of approximately 32 miles from central London. The town boasts a population of around 111,500 people, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortification in approximately AD 60, and the encampment which grew up in the area of the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon settlement followed the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, even though 100 years later it had become known by its present name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the locals of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the leading agitators were subsequently executed in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C witnessed yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged many alleged witches.

For several centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a major manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, crafting goods such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target in WWII, and it was hit on several occasions.

The railway arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did roughly 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, which made it possible for boats to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered serious decline during the 1980's, mainly because a good deal of its plants ceased to be profitable, though it continues to be a thriving and booming town today, for the most part due to the closeness to the capital, and the superb road and rail communications.

The town lies adjacent to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's around 16 mls drive from Colchester and about 51 km from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
