The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, roughly thirty two mls from the city of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of around 111,500 residents, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortress in roughly the 1st century AD, and the commune that grew up in the locality of the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement followed after the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was noted as Celmeresfort, although by1189 being called by its current name of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the inhabitants of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the agitators were thereafter put to death in the town after Richard II ended the uprising.

The 17th century witnessed even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death numerous presumed witches.

Through the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a vital industrial town during the 19th Cent, producing products such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was struck quite a few times.

The train came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs before (1797), when it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, which made it possible for vessels to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into some decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because a high percentage of its industrial facilities closed down, though it still is a thriving and booming town today, mostly due to its nearness to the city of london, and the quality rail and road communications.

Chelmsford is positioned near the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is some sixteen mls drive from Colchester and about 51 kilometres from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
