The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies on the Chelmer and Can rivers, a car journey of some 32 miles from the heart of London. The town boasts a populace of some 111,000 people, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is an early town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

A Saxon camp followed after the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was recognized as Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later it had taken on its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C many of the people of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the main instigators were subsequently hung in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.
