Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 miles from central London. Chelmsford has a population of some 110,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fort in approximately AD 60, and the settlement that grew up surrounding the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon community followed the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later it had taken on its current identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the occupants of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the main culprits were later hung in the town after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th Cent witnessed even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed countless presumed witches.

For several centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved into an important manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, producing such products as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial engineering led to its being a target for bombing in WW2, and it was struck on several occasions.

The railway came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years earlier (1797), when it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging watercraft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into some decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a good deal of its industrial facilities shut down, although it is still a flourishing and growing town today, mostly because of its close proximity to London, and the first rate rail and road links.

The town sits close to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's roughly 16 miles drive from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometers from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
