Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated on the rivers Can and Chelmer, a car journey of roughly thirty two miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of around 110,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in approximately AD 60, and the village which grew up in the area of the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment succeeded the decline of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was registered as Celmeresfort, however one hundred years later it had taken on its modern identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century many of the people of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the ringleaders were later executed in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the uprising.

The 17th Cent witnessed more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged numerous alleged exponents of witchcraft.

For several centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, producing such goods as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target of bombing in WWII, and it was struck on several occasions.

The railway found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about 45 years before (1797), when it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling ships to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through some decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a good deal of its industry ceased to be profitable, even so it remains a thriving and growing town today, principally due to its closeness to the city of london, and its first class road and rail communications.

Chelmsford is situated close to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is some 26 km from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
