River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fort in approximately AD 60, and the encampment which evolved surrounding the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon encampment followed the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later it had taken on its present-day name of Chelmsford.

As early as the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the residents of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the main instigators were later hung in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C saw many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged numerous suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For many years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, making items such as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target for bombing during the Second World War, and it was successfully struck on a number of occasions.

The railway came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years before (1797), at which time it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, when a lot of its factories shut down, all the same it continues to be a successful and blooming town today, predominantly because of its closeness to the city of london, plus its exceptional rail and road communications.
