Essex's county town, Chelmsford sits upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two miles from the city of London. Chelmsford has a populace of around one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in about the 1st century AD, and the encampment which grew up around the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp succeeded the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recognized as Celmeresfort, nevertheless one hundred years later it was being referred to by its modern title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the residents of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the leading instigators were later put to death in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th Cent saw more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed countless presumed witches.

Across the centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a substantial industrial town during the 19th Cent, manufacturing goods such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industry caused it to be a bombing target in World War 2, and it was successfully struck on a number of occasions.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five years before (1797), at which time it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for vessels to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, as a lot of its industry closed, even so it still is a thriving and booming town today, principally because of its nearness to the city of london, and the first class road and rail communications.
