Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located on the rivers Chelmer and Can, a driving distance of about 32 miles from central London. Chelmsford has got a population of about 111,000 people, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortification in roughly 60 AD, and the encampment that grew up around the fortress was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community followed the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recognized as Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later it had become known by its modern name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the citizens of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the instigators were consequently executed in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The seventeenth century saw even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death countless assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved into a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, crafting products such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about forty five years before (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for vessels to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through considerable decline during the 1980's, because a high percentage of its manufacturing facilities closed down, although it continues to be a successful and booming town today, primarily because of its nearness to the city of london, and its outstanding rail and road connections.

The town sits just off the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is approximately twenty six km driving distance from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
