The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated on the Chelmer and Can rivers, about thirty two mls from the heart of London. The town has a population of some one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is an old town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortification in approximately AD 60, and the commune that grew up round the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon camp superseded the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later it had taken on its current identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the occupants of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the agitators were subsequently put to death in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century witnessed many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death numerous assumed witches.

For many centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town in the 19th C, producing goods such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target in World War 2, and it was successfully struck on a few occasions.

The railway arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for boats to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into a time of decline during the 1980's, as a lot of its industry closed, however it still is a successful and booming town today, mostly due to the nearness to London, and its first rate rail and road links.

Chelmsford is set adjacent to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's around 26 km driving distance from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
