Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated on the rivers Chelmer and Can, a driving distance of around 32 miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of some 111,500 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD, and the encampment which evolved around the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment came after the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later it had taken on its current identity of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century many of the occupants of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the leading instigators were accordingly put to death in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century saw yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged countless suspected witches.

Over the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a substantial industrial town in the nineteenth century, producing goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target in World War 2, and it was struck quite a few times.

The train came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately 45 yrs before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, enabling vessels to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through a time of decline during the 1980's, simply because a high percentage of its industrial facilities went bust, however it remains a flourishing and blooming town today, principally because of its proximity to the capital, and its excellent road and rail communications.

Chelmsford is positioned just off the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is approximately twenty six km car journey from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
