Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two miles from the centre of London. The town has got a populace of about 111,500 inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortification in approximately the 1st century AD, and the village that expanded surrounding the fortress was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement came after the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although by1189 it had become known by its present title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent a number of the occupants of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the main instigators were consequently hung in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C saw yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged numerous alleged witches.

Across the centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town in the 19th C, crafting goods such as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was struck several times.

The railway line arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done about forty five years before (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, letting boats to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a time of decline during the 1980's, when a good deal of its industry ceased to be profitable, even so it continues to be a successful and blooming town today, mostly because of its close proximity to the capital, and the superb rail and road communications.

The town can be found adjacent to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is some sixteen mls drive from Colchester and about 32 mls from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
