Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 miles from the heart of London. The town boasts a populace of approximately 111,000 people, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is an old town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in roughly AD 60, and the village which grew up round the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon encampment followed after the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, whilst by the year 1199 it had taken on its present-day name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the locals of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the main culprits were subsequently put to death in the town after Richard II ended the uprising.

The seventeenth century witnessed even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death numerous suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Over the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved into an important manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, making products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target in World War 2, and it was hit a number of times.

The railway arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for boats to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, because a high percentage of its manufacturers closed, though it still is a successful and growing town today, mainly due to the close proximity to the capital, plus the terrific rail and road links.
