Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, a car journey of some 32 miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford has got a population of around 111,500 inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was later the site of a Roman fortress in approximately the first century AD, and the commune that expanded around the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon community followed after the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, however 100 years later it had taken on its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the people of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the main instigators were thereafter executed in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th century saw more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed countless supposed witches.

Over the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved into an important manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing such products as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The railway line found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for vessels to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into some decline in the nineteen-eighties, because a good deal of its factories closed down, even so it continues to be a thriving and blooming town today, primarily because of its closeness to the capital, plus its superb road and rail connections.

Chelmsford stands adjacent to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is about 26 km drive from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
