The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits on the Can and Chelmer rivers, about 32 mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford has got a population of roughly one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fort in around the 1st century AD, and the settlement that grew up surrounding the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon encampment followed after the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though by1189 it was being referred to by its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the citizens of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the instigators were thereafter executed in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century saw even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed countless supposed witches.

Across the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town in the 19th C, producing products such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target for bombing in WWII, and it was struck a number of times.

The railway line arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done roughly forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing watercraft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into significant decline in the 1980's, since much of its industry ceased to be profitable, although it still is a successful and blooming town today, largely due to the nearness to the city of london, and its superb road and rail links.

Chelmsford stands near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is roughly 16 mls drive from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
