A Saxon camp superseded the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was described as Celmeresfort, nonetheless by1189 being called by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century many of the people of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the leading instigators were ultimately put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the rebellion.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a substantial manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing items such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its importance in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was successfully hit several times.

The railway arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years before (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for vessels to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into serious decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because a lot of its industry shut down, even so it is still a successful and growing town today, for the most part due to the proximity to London, and its good rail and road connections.
