The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford has a population of some 111,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is an ancient town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD, and the village that expanded round the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement superseded the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was recognized as Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later it had taken on its present title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C some of the locals of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the main culprits were ultimately put to death in the town after Richard II ended the uprising.

The 17th Cent saw yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death countless supposed witches.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a vital industrial town in the 19th C, manufacturing products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target during WW2, and it was successfully struck on a number of occasions.

The railway came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some around 45 years before (1797), when it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting ships to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because a lot of its industry went bust, all the same it continues to be a successful and growing town today, mostly due to its closeness to the capital, and the outstanding road and rail connections.
