Essex's county town, Chelmsford sits on the Chelmer and Can rivers, around thirty two miles from the city of London. The town has a population of some 111,500 residents, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fort in roughly the 1st century AD, and the village which developed in the locality of the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment came after the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was documented as Celmeresfort, nevertheless one hundred years later it had taken on its current identity of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the occupants of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the leading culprits were consequently executed in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C saw yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death many suspected witches.

For several years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a vital industrial town in the 19th century, producing such products as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target during World War 2, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The train found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing vessels to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into some decline in the 1980's, because a high percentage of its industry closed, though it remains a flourishing and developing town today, mainly due to its close proximity to the city of london, and the first class road and rail connections.
