The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies on the Can and Chelmer rivers, a drive of some 32 mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford has a population of about one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was later the location of a Roman fortress in around the first century AD, and the encampment which evolved in the vicinity of the fortification was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement followed after the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recognized as Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later it was being referred to by its present name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century a number of the inhabitants of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the leading culprits were thereafter executed in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century saw even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged numerous assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into an important industrial town during the 19th Cent, manufacturing goods such as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target for bombing in WWII, and it was hit many times.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did roughly 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for boats to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, since a good deal of its manufacturing plants went bust, in spite of this it continues to be a flourishing and blooming town today, primarily due to its proximity to the city of london, plus the outstanding road and rail links.

The town is situated close to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is roughly 26 km driving distance from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
