Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two miles from the centre of London. The town boasts a population of around one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is an early town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortress in roughly AD 60, and the village that grew up around the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement followed after the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was described as Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later it had taken on its current identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the occupants of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the leading instigators were consequently put to death in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent witnessed many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death many presumed witches.

Throughout the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to a significant industrial town during the 19th C, producing such items as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industry led to its being a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was successfully hit on a few occasions.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately 45 years before (1797), when it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into substantial decline during the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a high percentage of its industrial facilities shut down, even so it still is a flourishing and developing town today, for the most part due to its proximity to London, plus the quality rail and road links.

The town can be found beside the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is some sixteen miles from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
