Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two mls from the heart of London. The town has a populace of roughly 111,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was later the site of a Roman fortification in approximately AD 60, and the commune which grew up in the area of the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon camp succeeded the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recorded as Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later it was being referred to by its present identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the inhabitants of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the ringleaders were subsequently hung in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century saw many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged numerous alleged exponents of witchcraft.

For many years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed in to a vital manufacturing town in the 19th century, manufacturing such goods as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industry caused it to be a bombing target during WWII, and it was successfully struck a few times.

The railway arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging craft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because a lot of its industry closed, yet it still is a successful and developing town today, mostly due to its nearness to the city of london, plus its outstanding rail and road connections.

Chelmsford is situated adjacent to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is some sixteen mls car journey from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
