Essex's county town, Chelmsford sits on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of roughly 111,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortress in roughly AD 60, and the town that grew up surrounding the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community followed after the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was listed as Celmeresfort, even though 100 years later it was being referred to by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century a number of the citizens of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the instigators were thereafter executed in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century witnessed many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death numerous alleged exponents of witchcraft.

For several generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed into a serious industrial town during the nineteenth century, crafting such goods as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial engineering led to its being a target for bombing in the Second World War, and it was struck a few times.

The railway line found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, enabling craft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered a period of decline in the 1980's, when a high percentage of its manufacturing facilities closed down, though it continues to be a thriving and expanding town today, mostly because of its proximity to the city of london, plus the excellent rail and road communications.

The town is located adjacent to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is around twenty six km driving distance from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
