An Anglo Saxon settlement superseded the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later being called by its modern title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent a number of the people of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the main instigators were subsequently put to death in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century witnessed lots more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death many assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a major manufacturing town during the 19th C, crafting such items as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was successfully hit on a number of occasions.

The train came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years before (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for watercraft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into some decline during the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a lot of its industry ceased to be profitable, though it is still a thriving and blooming town today, mostly due to the proximity to the city of london, plus its exceptional road and rail communications.
