The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, a car journey of roughly 32 miles from the city of London. Chelmsford has got a population of about 110,000 inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortification in roughly the first century AD, and the settlement which grew up round the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon settlement followed the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was recognized as Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later it had become known by its present name of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the locals of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the main instigators were ultimately hung in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century saw more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death numerous suspected witches.

Throughout the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to an important manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, crafting products such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses.
