Essex's county town, Chelmsford can be found on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 miles from central London. Chelmsford boasts a population of about 111,500 occupants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is an old town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was later the site of a Roman fort in roughly AD 60, and the community which evolved around the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement came after the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, whilst by the year 1199 it had become known by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the residents of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the main culprits were subsequently hung in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century saw lots more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death numerous suspected witches.

Through the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to a serious industrial town during the 19th C, manufacturing such products as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industry resulted in its being a target for bombing during the Second World War, and it was hit a few times.

The railway line arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs before (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, which enabled craft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered some decline in the nineteen-eighties, when a lot of its industry ceased to be profitable, even so it remains a thriving and growing town today, mostly due to its closeness to London, plus the first class road and rail communications.

The town stands near the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is around 16 mls from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
