The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 mls from central London. The town boasts a population of about 111,500 occupants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is an early town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in about AD 60, and the community that grew up around the fort was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment came after the end of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, nonetheless 100 years later it was being referred to by its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the inhabitants of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the instigators were consequently executed in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The seventeenth century witnessed more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed numerous supposed witches.

Over the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, making such items as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was successfully struck a number of times.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for ships to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered a period of decline in the 1980's, when much of its industries went bust, though it is still a flourishing and blooming town today, predominantly due to the nearness to London, plus its terrific rail and road communications.
