A Saxon encampment came after the decline of the Romans in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, however one hundred years later it was being referred to by its present identity of Chelmsford.

For several years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, producing goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target for bombing in World War 2, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The railway line came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, letting boats to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered substantial decline during the 1980's, when a good deal of its industry shut down, though it still is a thriving and booming town today, mostly due to its proximity to the capital, and its excellent rail and road communications.
