Essex's county town, Chelmsford sits on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two mls from central London. The town has got a population of some 110,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD, and the encampment that grew up in the area of the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement superseded the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later it had become known by its present identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C some of the citizens of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the ringleaders were later hung in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C witnessed lots more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged numerous supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Through the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned into an important manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, producing products such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industry resulted in its being a target of bombing in WW2, and it was struck a number of times.

The train came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately 45 years earlier (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, helping craft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into a period of decline in the 1980's, simply because much of its industry ceased to be profitable, though it remains a thriving and booming town today, for the most part due to its proximity to the city of london, plus its excellent road and rail links.

The town is positioned near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's approximately 16 miles driving distance from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometres from the heart of London.
