The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 miles from the centre of London. The town has a populace of roughly 110,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was later the site of a Roman fortress in around the 1st century AD, and the town which expanded surrounding the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment succeeded the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was registered as Celmeresfort, whilst by1189 it was being referred to by its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the inhabitants of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the main culprits were consequently executed in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century saw even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed many alleged witches.

Over the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed into an important industrial town during the nineteenth century, producing such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was successfully hit a number of times.

The train arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did roughly 45 years before (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a high percentage of its production facilities shut down, though it remains a successful and growing town today, mostly because of its closeness to London, plus the first rate rail and road connections.

The town is set close to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's some twenty six km car journey from Colchester and about 51 km from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
