The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two miles from the city of London. The town has a population of some 111,500 occupants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortification in approximately AD 60, and the village which grew up in the vicinity of the fort was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon settlement succeeded the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, although by the year 1199 it had taken on its present title of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the people of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the leading agitators were consequently executed in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C saw lots more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged countless presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed in to an important industrial town in the nineteenth century, crafting products such as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target during WWII, and it was struck on several occasions.

The railway arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some about 45 years before (1797), when it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling boats to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a good deal of its industry closed, even so it continues to be a flourishing and blooming town today, largely because of its close proximity to the city of london, and its first class rail and road connections.

The town is located adjacent to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is around 26 kilometers car journey from Colchester and about 51 km from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
