The county town of Essex, Chelmsford can be found upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford has a populace of some one hundred and eleven thousand people, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortress in roughly 60 AD, and the commune which expanded surrounding the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement came after the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, although by1189 it had taken on its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century many of the locals of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the main instigators were subsequently executed in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century saw yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed many supposed witches.

Over the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved into an important manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, manufacturing items such as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target during WWII, and it was struck a number of times.

The railway line found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing ships to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a good deal of its manufacturing facilities closed, even so it remains a thriving and growing town today, mostly due to the closeness to the capital, plus its quality road and rail links.
