The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two miles from the city of London. The town boasts a population of about 111,500 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is an old town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was later the site of a Roman fortification in about the 1st century AD, and the encampment which grew up surrounding the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon encampment followed after the end of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was recognized as Celmeresfort, whilst by1189 it had become known by its present name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C some of the people of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the agitators were consequently executed in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th C witnessed many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death many assumed witches.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to an important industrial town in the nineteenth century, making products such as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The train came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years before (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting craft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered a period of decline in the 1980's, because a high percentage of its industry went bust, yet it is still a thriving and blooming town today, mainly due to its proximity to the city of london, and its superb road and rail communications.

The town is found beside the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is approximately 26 kilometres driving distance from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
