Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 mls from the centre of London. The town boasts a population of about 111,500 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is an old town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD, and the encampment that grew up around the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment came after the end of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was noted as Celmeresfort, whilst by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C many of the inhabitants of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the main culprits were later put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th C witnessed many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death countless suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Throughout the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to a major manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, producing products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was struck on several occasions.

The train arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did roughly forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, allowing watercraft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through serious decline in the nineteen-eighties, since a good deal of its industries shut down, even so it is still a thriving and booming town today, primarily due to the nearness to London, plus the exceptional road and rail communications.

The town stands just off the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is roughly twenty six km drive from Colchester and about 51 kilometers from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
