River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD, and the encampment which evolved around the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment superseded the demise of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, whilst by the year 1199 being called by its current name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the locals of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the leading culprits were thereafter hung in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century witnessed many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed numerous alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Over the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a major industrial town in the nineteenth century, producing items such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industrial engineering led to its being a target of bombing in WWII, and it was successfully hit on a few occasions.

The railway found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately forty five years before (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into significant decline during the nineteen-eighties, as a good deal of its manufacturing plants ceased to be profitable, however it continues to be a successful and growing town today, predominantly due to the closeness to the capital, plus the superb rail and road links.

The town can be found adjacent to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is about sixteen mls drive from Colchester and about 51 km from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
