The county town of Essex, Chelmsford can be found on the Can and Chelmer rivers, approximately thirty two mls from central London. Chelmsford boasts a population of about 111,000 people, while the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

A Saxon community followed after the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was described as Celmeresfort, nevertheless one hundred years later it had taken on its modern name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the people of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the instigators were accordingly hung in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the uprising.
