The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, approximately thirty two mls from central London. Chelmsford boasts a population of approximately 110,000 inhabitants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fort in roughly 60 AD, and the town which expanded surrounding the fortification was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment superseded the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 it had become known by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the locals of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the main culprits were subsequently executed in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The seventeenth century witnessed lots more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death countless assumed witches.

For several years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a substantial industrial town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target during WWII, and it was successfully struck several times.

The railway line found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging craft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through a period of decline during the 1980's, mainly because much of its industries closed down, though it is still a successful and booming town today, principally due to the closeness to the capital, and the good rail and road connections.
