Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located on the Chelmer and Can rivers, a car journey of approximately 32 mls from central London. The town has a population of roughly one hundred and eleven thousand people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

A Saxon community succeeded the demise of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, nevertheless 100 years later it had taken on its present title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the inhabitants of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the agitators were consequently hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th century witnessed more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged numerous presumed witches.
