Essex's county town, Chelmsford can be found on the Chelmer and Can rivers, around 32 miles from the city of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of around one hundred and eleven thousand residents, while the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortress in around AD 60, and the encampment that grew up round the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community came after the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, whilst by1189 being called by its current title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century a number of the people of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the ringleaders were subsequently hung in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century saw more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed many suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Through the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a serious manufacturing town during the 19th C, manufacturing products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target for bombing in WW2, and it was hit many times.

The railway line arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, which made it possible for craft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, because a high percentage of its industry closed, even so it still is a successful and growing town today, largely because of its nearness to the capital, plus the outstanding road and rail links.

The town can be found close to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's about 26 kilometres drive from Colchester and about 32 mls from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
