The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two miles from the city of London. Chelmsford has a populace of approximately 111,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is an old town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD, and the settlement that expanded around the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment followed after the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 it had become known by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century a number of the inhabitants of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the leading agitators were ultimately executed in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century witnessed yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed many suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Over the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to a major industrial town during the 19th C, making products such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industrial engineering led to its being a target of bombing in the Second World War, and it was successfully struck on a few occasions.

The railway came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done about 45 yrs before (1797), when it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, letting ships to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into substantial decline in the 1980's, because a good deal of its industry went bust, though it is still a successful and booming town today, mostly because of its close proximity to the capital, plus the first class rail and road communications.

Chelmsford lies just off the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is approximately twenty six km drive from Colchester and about 51 kms from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
