Essex's county town, Chelmsford is positioned on the Chelmer and Can rivers, approximately thirty two mls from the centre of London. The town has a population of around 110,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is an ancient town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in roughly 60 AD, and the village which evolved around the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon camp succeeded the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, however 100 years later it had taken on its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the occupants of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the instigators were subsequently hung in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent saw many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed many assumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned into a vital manufacturing town during the 19th century, producing items such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industry led to its being a target of bombing in World War 2, and it was hit a number of times.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, which made it possible for ships to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into significant decline in the 1980's, mainly because a good deal of its industrial facilities ceased to be profitable, in spite of this it remains a flourishing and developing town today, predominantly due to the closeness to the capital, and the first class rail and road communications.

The town is found just off the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is roughly 16 mls from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
