Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two mls from the heart of London. The town has a population of around 111,500 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was later the site of a Roman fortress in roughly 60 AD, and the community that developed around the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon community came after the demise of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later it had become known by its modern title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the residents of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the leading instigators were accordingly put to death in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th C saw even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death numerous supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved into a major industrial town in the 19th C, producing such products as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its importance in light industry caused it to be a target of bombing in the Second World War, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The train arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, enabling ships to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through substantial decline during the 1980's, mainly because much of its industry went bust, though it remains a thriving and developing town today, primarily because of its close proximity to London, plus the exceptional road and rail connections.

The town stands near the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's about 16 miles from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
