Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, a car journey of roughly thirty two miles from the centre of London. The town has got a population of some one hundred and eleven thousand residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortification in roughly the first century AD, and the community that grew up around the fortress was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon camp superseded the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, whilst by the year 1199 it had become known by its present identity of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century some of the residents of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the agitators were accordingly hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th C witnessed many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death many presumed witches.

Over the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important industrial town during the 19th century, manufacturing items such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target of bombing in World War 2, and it was hit a number of times.

The railway line arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some about 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which made it possible for watercraft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered significant decline during the 1980's, mainly because a high percentage of its production facilities shut down, even so it is still a thriving and growing town today, principally due to its nearness to the city of london, and the terrific rail and road communications.

The town sits near the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is approximately sixteen mls car journey from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
