River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fort in approximately AD 60, and the community which expanded in the vicinity of the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community followed the end of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later it had become known by its present name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C some of the people of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the agitators were thereafter hung in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent witnessed more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged numerous suspected witches.

Over the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a vital manufacturing town in the 19th century, crafting products such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target for bombing in World War 2, and it was successfully hit on a number of occasions.

The train arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 years before (1797), at which time it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging craft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a time of decline during the 1980's, mainly because a high percentage of its industry ceased to be profitable, even so it still is a flourishing and blooming town today, largely due to the proximity to the capital, plus the exceptional rail and road links.

The town can be found adjacent to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's about 26 km from Colchester and about 32 mls from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
