Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, roughly 32 miles from the centre of London. The town boasts a population of around 110,000 inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.
