The talent of specialist foot therapy existed in the times of the ancient Egyptians with carvings from around 4,400 years ago giving proof of that, where treatment on feet and hands is depicted. Hippocrates mentioned calluses and corns, and he understood the necessity to physically reduce hardened skin, followed by removing what caused it. He came up with skin scrapers for this particular functionality and these were actually the earliest scalpels.

Up to the turn of the 20th century, chiropodists - now named podiatrists - were detached from organized medical science. Practitioners were independently licensed doctors who took care of the feet, ankles and related leg parts. You'll find documents of the King of France using a personal podiatrist, as also did Napoleon Bonaparte. In the Usa, President Abraham Lincoln had constant problems regarding his feet and chose a chiropodist (podiatrist) called Isachar Zacharie, and he not simply cared for Abraham's feet, but in addition was sent out by the President on top secret missions to confer with commanders of the Confederacy at the time of the American Civil War.

The 1st society of podiatrists, at that time known as chirpodists, was established in New York in 1895 and still operates nowadays as the NYSPMA. The earliest podiatry school opened up in 1911. A year later the UK set up a similar society at London's Foot Hospital and a school was added in nineteen nineteen. More: Podiatry and Chiropody
