Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, about thirty two mls from the city of London. The town boasts a population of some one hundred and eleven thousand people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is an early town which was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

An Anglo Saxon encampment succeeded the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, nevertheless by1189 being called by its present title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent a number of the citizens of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the agitators were accordingly hung in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th century saw even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed numerous suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For many centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a major industrial town in the 19th century, manufacturing such goods as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was struck a few times.

The railway line came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for ships to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into considerable decline in the 1980's, because a lot of its industry went bust, even so it continues to be a successful and growing town today, primarily due to its nearness to London, plus the quality rail and road connections.

The town stands just off the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is about 16 mls driving distance from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
