River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fort in approximately the 1st century AD, and the encampment which grew up round the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment followed the demise of the Romans in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was described as Celmeresfort, nonetheless by the year 1199 it had taken on its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the locals of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the instigators were thereafter put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The seventeenth century saw even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed countless supposed exponents of witchcraft.

For several centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a major industrial town in the nineteenth century, making products such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its import in light industry caused it to be a target of bombing during the Second World War, and it was successfully struck on a few occasions.

The railway line arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for watercraft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, since much of its industry ceased to be profitable, though it still is a thriving and blooming town today, principally because of its close proximity to London, and the first class road and rail communications.
