Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, a driving distance of around thirty two miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford has got a population of around 110,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in about AD 60, and the commune that grew up in the area of the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement followed after the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, although by1189 it was being referred to by its current name of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century some of the occupants of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the main culprits were ultimately hung in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent witnessed even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death numerous alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Across the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned in to a major manufacturing town in the 19th C, crafting such products as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The railway line found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some around 45 years before (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging boats to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into substantial decline in the 1980's, mainly because a high percentage of its industry shut down, even so it still is a flourishing and expanding town today, for the most part because of its proximity to the capital, plus the first class road and rail links.
