Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, a driving distance of roughly 32 mls from the heart of London. The town has got a population of some 111,500 people, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is an old town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.
