Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of about 110,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church got the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortification in about AD 60, and the town which grew up in the locality of the fortification was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community superseded the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was recognized as Celmeresfort, nevertheless by1189 being called by its modern title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the residents of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the leading instigators were ultimately hung in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C saw many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death many suspected witches.

Across the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to an important manufacturing town during the 19th C, crafting products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target of bombing during the Second World War, and it was struck several times.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some about 45 years earlier (1797), when it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for watercraft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, when a high percentage of its industry went bust, even so it remains a flourishing and expanding town today, primarily due to its proximity to the city of london, and its quality rail and road links.

Chelmsford sits adjacent to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is some 26 km driving distance from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
