Essex's county town, Chelmsford sits upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two miles from the heart of London. The town has a populace of roughly 111,500 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD, and the village that expanded surrounding the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon camp superseded the end of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, nevertheless 100 years later it had taken on its modern identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century many of the citizens of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the main agitators were thereafter hung in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the revolt.

The seventeenth century saw more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged numerous alleged exponents of witchcraft.

For many years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved into a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th C, producing such goods as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target for bombing in World War 2, and it was successfully struck on a number of occasions.

The train came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, helping boats to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into some decline in the 1980's, as much of its industry closed down, but it remains a thriving and expanding town today, mostly due to its closeness to London, plus its good road and rail connections.

The town is located just off the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's around 26 km driving distance from Colchester and about 32 miles from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
