Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found on the Can and Chelmer rivers, roughly 32 mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford has got a population of roughly 111,000 occupants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was later the site of a Roman fortification in about the 1st century AD, and the encampment that expanded round the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon settlement came after the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recognized as Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century a number of the inhabitants of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the agitators were subsequently hung in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent saw many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed countless supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Throughout the centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed into an important manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, producing such goods as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial engineering led to its being a target for bombing during WW2, and it was successfully struck on several occasions.

The railway line arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, letting vessels to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, when a good deal of its industry closed, even so it remains a successful and growing town today, principally due to the proximity to the city of london, and the superb rail and road links.

The town is located beside the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is some 26 kilometers car journey from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
