The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of roughly 111,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in approximately the 1st century AD, and the settlement that grew up around the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement superseded the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was noted as Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later it had become known by its present identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the citizens of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the main instigators were subsequently hung in the town after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th century saw even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed numerous alleged exponents of witchcraft.

For several centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into an important industrial town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing such goods as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target for bombing in the Second World War, and it was hit several times.

The railway found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing craft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into a time of decline in the 1980's, as a high percentage of its industry closed down, though it remains a flourishing and growing town today, largely due to the closeness to the city of london, and the good rail and road connections.

Chelmsford sits close to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is around 26 kilometres driving distance from Colchester and about 32 mls from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
