The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located on the rivers Chelmer and Can, approximately 32 mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford has a population of some 111,500 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortification in about AD 60, and the village that grew up round the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon encampment followed the demise of the Romans in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 it had become known by its present title of Chelmsford.

As long ago thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century many of the inhabitants of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the leading agitators were consequently hung in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C saw more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed numerous supposed witches.

Across the generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, making such goods as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its importance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target in WW2, and it was struck several times.

The railway line came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did roughly 45 years before (1797), at which time it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing boats to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into significant decline in the nineteen-eighties, when a high percentage of its manufacturing plants closed down, in spite of this it still is a flourishing and expanding town today, mostly because of its nearness to London, and the terrific rail and road communications.
