Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, about 32 mls from the heart of London. The town boasts a populace of some 111,000 occupants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fort in approximately AD 60, and the settlement that grew up round the fort was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment came after the end of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, nevertheless 100 years later it was being referred to by its modern name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. The seventeenth century witnessed many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death numerous supposed witches.

For many years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned in to a major industrial town during the nineteenth century, making items such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target in World War 2, and it was struck several times.

The train found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately 45 yrs before (1797), when it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting craft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.
