The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, approximately 32 mls from the centre of London. The town has got a population of about 111,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortification in around AD 60, and the settlement that evolved around the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon camp superseded the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later it was being referred to by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

As long ago thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the occupants of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the main culprits were subsequently hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th Cent witnessed many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged many presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed into a substantial industrial town in the 19th C, producing items such as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target of bombing in World War 2, and it was successfully hit a number of times.

The railway line found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling ships to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through considerable decline during the nineteen-eighties, as a good deal of its industries shut down, though it is still a successful and blooming town today, for the most part because of its closeness to London, and its good road and rail communications.

Chelmsford sits beside the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's about 16 mls car journey from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
