The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford has got a population of about 111,500 inhabitants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is an early town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was later the site of a Roman fort in roughly the 1st century AD, and the community that expanded around the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon encampment followed the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was listed as Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later it had become known by its current title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century many of the occupants of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the leading culprits were consequently hung in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century saw more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed many presumed witches.

Across the centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned into an important manufacturing town during the 19th century, crafting such items as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industrial engineering led to its being a target for bombing during WW2, and it was struck many times.

The railway came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting vessels to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered substantial decline in the nineteen-eighties, since much of its industrial facilities shut down, however it still is a successful and developing town today, for the most part because of its proximity to the capital, and its good road and rail communications.

The town is located just off the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is some 26 kilometers from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometers from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
