Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located on the Can and Chelmer rivers, about 32 miles from central London. Chelmsford has a population of roughly one hundred and eleven thousand residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

Chelmsford is an old town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in around AD 60, and the settlement that grew up in the locality of the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon community followed after the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, even though by1189 it had taken on its current identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century a number of the inhabitants of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the main instigators were consequently executed in the town after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th C saw lots more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed countless presumed witches.

For several generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed in to a serious industrial town in the nineteenth century, crafting products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industry caused it to be a target of bombing in World War 2, and it was struck many times.

The train arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting ships to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, when a good deal of its manufacturers closed, even so it continues to be a thriving and booming town today, principally because of its proximity to the city of london, and the first rate rail and road communications.

Chelmsford is situated beside the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's some sixteen miles from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometres from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
