Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, roughly 32 miles from the city of London. The town has got a population of about 111,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in around AD 60, and the settlement that evolved around the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement followed after the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 it had become known by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the people of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the ringleaders were ultimately hung in the town after Richard II ended the uprising.

The seventeenth century witnessed yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged numerous suspected witches.

For many centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, manufacturing items such as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was successfully struck on several occasions.

The train arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five yrs before (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, letting boats to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a time of decline in the 1980's, when a lot of its industry closed down, though it remains a flourishing and blooming town today, predominantly due to its nearness to London, and its superb rail and road connections.

The town is positioned just off the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's around sixteen miles driving distance from Colchester and about 51 kilometers from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
