Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford has a population of some one hundred and eleven thousand people, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was later the location of a Roman fortification in roughly 60 AD, and the village that evolved surrounding the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon community followed after the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, even though by1189 it had become known by its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century many of the residents of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the ringleaders were thereafter hung in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent saw even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed numerous suspected witches.

For many generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned into an important manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, manufacturing items such as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The train arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did around forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging watercraft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through some decline during the 1980's, since a lot of its industry went bust, in spite of this it remains a successful and booming town today, primarily due to its nearness to the capital, and the superb road and rail communications.

The town can be found near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's around 26 kilometers driving distance from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
