Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two miles from the centre of London. The town has a population of roughly 111,000 residents, while the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is an early town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was later on the location of a Roman fort in around AD 60, and the commune which grew up surrounding the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment followed after the end of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was recognized as Celmeresfort, however by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its current name of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent a number of the occupants of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the instigators were ultimately executed in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C witnessed many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed countless presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a significant industrial town in the 19th C, manufacturing products such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was successfully hit on a number of occasions.

The train arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some roughly 45 years earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging vessels to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into some decline in the 1980's, because a lot of its industry closed down, in spite of this it remains a thriving and booming town today, for the most part due to its nearness to London, and its outstanding road and rail connections.
