The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 miles from the city of London. The town has got a populace of roughly 111,500 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in approximately AD 60, and the encampment which expanded around the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement followed after the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later it had taken on its modern name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the people of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the agitators were ultimately put to death in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century witnessed even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death numerous suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For several centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a significant manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, producing products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industry led to its being a target of bombing during World War 2, and it was successfully struck many times.

The railway line came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, which made it possible for watercraft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through some decline in the 1980's, mainly because a high percentage of its plants shut down, even so it still is a thriving and growing town today, primarily due to its proximity to London, plus its good rail and road communications.

The town is found just off the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is approximately 16 miles driving distance from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of the capital.
