The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies on the rivers Chelmer and Can, a drive of approximately thirty two miles from the centre of London. The town has a population of approximately 111,500 residents, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church got the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was later the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD, and the encampment that grew up in the area of the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp superseded the demise of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was described as Celmeresfort, nevertheless by the year 1199 it had taken on its current name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century a number of the inhabitants of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the leading instigators were thereafter executed in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th century witnessed yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged countless presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For many years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned into a serious industrial town in the 19th century, making such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was successfully struck on several occasions.

The railway came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing vessels to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into a period of decline in the 1980's, mainly because a good deal of its industry shut down, though it is still a successful and expanding town today, largely because of its closeness to London, plus its outstanding rail and road communications.

The town lies near the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is roughly twenty six km drive from Colchester and about 32 mls from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
