Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, around 32 miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford has a population of approximately 110,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is an early town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in about AD 60, and the community which grew up around the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon encampment came after the demise of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was documented as Celmeresfort, whilst by the year 1199 it had taken on its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the people of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the agitators were subsequently put to death in the town after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th Cent witnessed more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death countless alleged exponents of witchcraft.

For many centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, making such goods as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target during World War 2, and it was successfully hit on a number of occasions.

The railway line came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did roughly 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping vessels to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into considerable decline in the nineteen-eighties, since a lot of its factories went bust, though it still is a flourishing and expanding town today, predominantly due to the nearness to London, plus its quality rail and road links.

Chelmsford stands just off the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's approximately 26 km driving distance from Colchester and about 51 kilometers from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
