Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 miles from the city of London. The town has a population of approximately 111,500 occupants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD, and the town that expanded around the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement followed after the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century a number of the inhabitants of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the ringleaders were subsequently executed in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th century saw lots more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged numerous supposed exponents of witchcraft.

For many centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to a major industrial town in the 19th Cent, making products such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industry resulted in its being a target for bombing in World War 2, and it was successfully hit on a few occasions.

The railway line came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting boats to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into serious decline during the 1980's, as much of its industry closed, though it is still a thriving and booming town today, primarily because of its proximity to the city of london, plus its superb road and rail connections.
