The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned on the rivers Chelmer and Can, a car journey of about 32 miles from central London. The town has got a populace of some 111,500 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is an early town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortress in approximately AD 60, and the settlement which developed in the locality of the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon camp came after the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later it had become known by its present name of Chelmsford.

As early as the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the occupants of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the main instigators were accordingly put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th C saw more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed numerous presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to a substantial industrial town in the 19th C, manufacturing such products as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was struck many times.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, letting ships to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered substantial decline in the 1980's, because a high percentage of its production facilities went bust, but it still is a thriving and booming town today, mainly because of its nearness to London, and the exceptional rail and road links.
