The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two mls from central London. Chelmsford boasts a population of roughly 111,500 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is an ancient town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fort in around the 1st century AD, and the community that grew up in the area of the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon settlement followed after the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recognized as Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later it had taken on its modern title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century a number of the people of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the agitators were ultimately executed in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th Cent witnessed yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed many suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Throughout the centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed in to a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th century, crafting goods such as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industry led to its being a target for bombing in WW2, and it was hit several times.

The train arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some roughly forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging watercraft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, since a high percentage of its industries went bust, even so it is still a successful and developing town today, mostly due to the closeness to the capital, plus its first rate road and rail communications.

The town can be found near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is approximately 26 km driving distance from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the centre of the capital. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
