Essex's county town, Chelmsford can be found on the Chelmer and Can rivers, about thirty two miles from central London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of approximately 111,500 inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fort in approximately the 1st century AD, and the encampment that grew up in the area of the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon camp followed after the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later being called by its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the residents of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the leading instigators were later put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The seventeenth century witnessed even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged numerous presumed witches.

For many generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned into a major manufacturing town in the 19th century, crafting items such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target for bombing during World War 2, and it was successfully struck on several occasions.

The railway came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did roughly 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into a time of decline in the 1980's, as a lot of its industrial facilities went bust, though it continues to be a successful and expanding town today, predominantly due to the nearness to the city of london, and its first rate road and rail links.

The town is found near the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is approximately twenty six kilometres drive from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
