River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was later the location of a Roman fortification in roughly the 1st century AD, and the commune which evolved round the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon camp followed after the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, however by1189 being called by its modern name of Chelmsford.

As early as the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the inhabitants of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the agitators were ultimately hung in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th century saw lots more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death many presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Through the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a major industrial town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing such items as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial engineering led to its being a target for bombing in World War 2, and it was successfully hit quite a few times.

The train arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, enabling watercraft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a lot of its industrial facilities shut down, though it is still a flourishing and blooming town today, principally due to its proximity to London, and the outstanding road and rail connections.

The town lies beside the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's some twenty six km driving distance from Colchester and about 51 km from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
