Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 mls from the centre of London. The town has a population of some 110,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was later the site of a Roman fortress in approximately the first century AD, and the village which evolved surrounding the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon community followed the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, nonetheless one hundred years later it had taken on its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the people of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the ringleaders were ultimately executed in the town after Richard II ended the uprising.

The seventeenth century witnessed many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged numerous suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Over the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th C, manufacturing such items as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target of bombing during WWII, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The railway arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some roughly forty five years earlier (1797), when it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping craft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, as a good deal of its manufacturing facilities ceased to be profitable, even so it remains a successful and developing town today, mostly due to its close proximity to the city of london, and its first rate rail and road connections.
