The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, a drive of roughly thirty two mls from the heart of London. The town boasts a populace of some one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is an old town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortification in around the 1st century AD, and the community that grew up around the fortification was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon community superseded the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recognized as Celmeresfort, nevertheless by the year 1199 it had taken on its modern identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the occupants of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the leading agitators were thereafter executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th C saw even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged many assumed witches.

Across the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a substantial industrial town in the nineteenth century, producing such items as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industry led to its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The train arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years before (1797), when it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing craft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, because much of its industry ceased to be profitable, even so it remains a thriving and booming town today, largely because of its nearness to London, plus the first rate road and rail communications.

Chelmsford is situated adjacent to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is around sixteen miles car journey from Colchester and about 32 miles from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
